Books I've Bought But Never Read
We've all been there. You walk into a bookstore and smell the freshly printed pages. Your eyes dart across the uncreased bindings of the paperbacks and the shiny jackets of the hardcovers. You freeze momentarily as you decide which section to start in: fantasy? young adult? mystery? romance? or dare I say- nonfiction?
Somehow, when you get to the checkout counter, you've managed to collect enough books to start a small library.
You've guessed it- today we're going to tackle some of the books that I've bought but never read.
1. The Lord of the Rings Series
I think I'm confessing to a crime with this but, yup, I've never read the Lord of the Rings. Do what you wish with that information.
I'm not exactly sure why these have been sitting on my shelf unread for so long. The only justifiable thing I can really say here is that I bought this series from a used bookstore, so at least I didn't pay full price for them.
(Forgive me.)
2. House of Earth and Blood
The first time I ever read a Sarah J. Maas book was at the ripe age of eleven. I checked out the Throne of Glass series from the library and spent most of the time reading it wondering what the main character was doing in closets with Chaol. It would be a few years before I connected the dots with that one.
Despite the fact that Sarah J. Maas robbed me of my childhood innocence, once I was aware of such goings-on and could accurately predict when to flip through the next few pages without reading them, I became a pretty big fan of her writing style. I never ended up finishing the Throne of Glass series for some reason, and I still haven't, but I did go on to read ACOTAR and like it (lots of page skipping in that series, my goodness). So when I saw Sarah J. Maas' name in large print across a brand new book with a pretty cover, I had to have it.
Do I have any idea what this book is about? No. Have I ever picked it up and done so much as read the first page? No again. Do I have plans to read it eventually? Yes. But do I also have commitment and procrastination issues? Also yes.
3. Aurora Rising
Here's another case of me purchasing a book because it had a gorgeous cover and was written by an author that I like. Unlike most Amie Kaufman fans and despite my good intentions, I've never read the popular Illuminae series. I fell in love with Kaufman's writing style in a young-adult-contemporary-scifi-romance series she wrote with Meagan Spooner called These Broken Stars. (I still recommend that series to anyone looking for something on the lighter side that's simultaneously difficult to put down.)
Again, I haven't a single clue what this book is about. Probably space or something, guessing by the cover.
4. The Iron Will of Genie Lo
This one's a bit of a stretch as I have at least attempted to read it. And failed miserably.
The Genie Lo books are honestly a great concept. They're basically a spin-off of Percy Jackson with a female lead and Chinese mythological figures swapped out for the Green pantheon. I sped through the first book in hours, but I never managed to get interested enough in the second one.
Hence, it has been taking up a precious 0.75 inch of space on my bookshelf for a year and counting.
5. Prisoner B-3087
This book was an impulse purchase at a used book sale. I'm pretty sure I bought it when I was reading the Ruta Sepetys book Salt to the Sea because it's set in a similar time frame. Sometimes a gal just feels like reading WW2 historical fiction.
I completely forgot I owned this until I was going through my shelves for this particular post, but chances are I'll pick it up the next time I'm looking for a historical fiction.
Hopefully I've granted you some peace of mind with the knowledge that I, too, am a chronic procrastinator with good intentions to read but a lack of time to do so. (If you need more assurance of this then go take a look at my Goodreads TBR that is literally hundreds of books long.) I'm certain that this list of books will only continue to grow, so I guess I'll have to make my peace with it.
Leave a comment if you also suffer from this problem, and have a great Friday! :)
Love,
Gurlaffe
